Dr. Edward McInnis, Lt. (N), M.D., C.C.F.P., brings a wealth of experience to family and emergency medicine, with a decade specializing in emergency and trauma care alongside 16 years as a family physician. Beyond his medical commitments, he wears many hats: devoted father to four, athlete, lieutenant (N) in the Canadian Armed Forces, Navy reservist, and committed volunteer.

The Early Years

Growing up in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada, he was deeply involved in sports from an early age, excelling in hockey, baseball, tennis, and golf. His athletic talent was evident as he played competitively in Junior A hockey and caught the attention of the Boston Red Sox for his pitching skills. He developed a strong work ethic from a young age, balancing a paper route at ten with a full-time job at McDonald’s by age 13.

Education, Professional Licensure, and Certifications

His academic journey began with a B.B.A. from Mount Saint Vincent University in 1992 and a BSc (Honors) in Biochemistry and Genetics from Dalhousie University in 1997. Afterward, he pursued Epidemiology at Dalhousie University before enrolling in Dalhousie Medical School, where he earned his MD in 2004. Postgraduate Emergency and Family Medicine training was completed at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.

He holds various certifications, including MCC (Licensure of Medical Council of Canada), commissioning as a Sub-Lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Navy, C.C.F.P. (Canadian College of Family Physicians), and later advancing to Lieutenant (N) in the Royal Canadian Navy.

Honors and Awards

Throughout his career, he has garnered recognition for his achievements, receiving honors such as the Prince Edward Island Top Medical Student Scholarship, the Burke Certificate for Promise in Family Medicine, and commendations for his research contributions, including a Special Citation for Meritorious Service in the Canadian Armed Forces.

Academic Experience

Dr. Edward McInnis has held diverse academic roles, serving as an Associate Professor with the Department of Biological Laboratory Studies at Dalhousie University, a Senior Post Graduate Clinical Instructor at McMaster University, and a Senior Professor and Evaluator at the Canadian Forces School of Physician Assistants in C.F.B. Borden, Ontario.

Serving His Country

For nine years, he served as a Lieutenant (N) in the Canadian Armed Forces, fulfilling various roles such as medical officer, Disaster Assistance Response Team (D.A.R.T.) member during Operation PLATEAU, bio-terrorism medicine consultant, and liaison between Canadian Forces and the Canadian Medical Association. He continues to serve as a Class B reservist.

Clinical Experience and Medical Practice

His clinical journey has seen him work as an Emergency Physician at McMaster University Hospital before assuming the role of Director of Care at the Wasaga/Angus Community Health Center – Family Practice. In 2010, he joined the Medical Division of the Canadian Armed Forces as a Class B reservist.

Volunteer Work

Volunteering has been a central aspect of his life, beginning with roles at the Barrington Street Shelter in Halifax during medical school and extending to various homeless shelters and S.T.D. clinics in Hamilton and Toronto. His volunteer efforts also include aiding individuals in exiting the sex trade and tutoring children in group homes.

A Family Man, A Man of Faith

Dr. Edward McInnis cherishes his role as a father to three daughters (ages 24, 19, and 9) and one son (age 22), actively participating in their lives and supporting their extracurricular endeavors. As a practicing Christian, he attends Mapleview Christian Church weekly with his children, nurturing their shared faith journey.
